The Double Trident
18 May 2012

Edificio Antiguo del Campus de Bilbao

The University of Deusto’s main building is organised according to a symmetrical floor plan. A short axis perpendicular to that of the path ascending from the portico to the chapel through the lobby and main staircases is the feature which serves to determine the overall arrangement. On either side, two patios (cloisters) relieve the overall gravity of the building and allow for the smaller built spaces, lecture halls or others, to be placed on the perimeter. The entire plan is extremely logical, and shows evidence of careful planning. The building is the result of a well reasoned layout, which is in keeping with its eclectic nature: order versus creative genius. Although the building has been formed from the organic accumulation of square and rectangular spaces, some of which touch on others, it is not a regular polygon. Its abstract image is that of a porous-based double trident, which is much more pronounced on the northern side.

The Brother Francis Gárate

Today, the vast majority of students enter the university, not through its front door a few meters from the river, but through the campus gate nearest Deusto Bridge. Then, all contact between the University and the outside world for most teachers and 350 students was made through Brother Francis Gárate. He was the only caretaker for nearly 24 hours – his room, or rather hole, was a stone’s throw – seven days a week, 365 days of each of his 41 years of service.

The Basque resistance
26 January 2012

La resistencia vasca / Euskal erresistentzia / The Basque resistance

In October 1936, the University celebrated its golden jubilee. However, its classrooms were opened for less academic purposes. In July, the civil war had broken with the military uprising in Morocco. Guipúzcoa, Vizcaya and Alava, as well as Santander and Asturias, remained loyal to the Republic. San Sebastian and most of Guipúzcoa soon fell in the hands of rebel soldiers. Bilbao was the center of the Basque resistance. The University buildings were barracks for the makeshift militia.

The hallmark of students at Deusto

Discipline should be an instrument favoring study and performance. It was solitude and silence that were the prerequisites that decided the location of the University of Deusto in that area, somewhat removed or separated from the city centre. It was believed that this departure was necessary to delve into the philosophical problems and reflection that should be the hallmark of students at Deusto.

The name of the University
2 January 2012

El nombre de Universidad / Unibertsitatearen izena / The name of the University

Deusto (or Deustu), Basque place name whose etymology is not clarified, has lent its name to the university. Deustos academic authorities used different names, especially the “School of Higher Education,” as stated in the label of many of the books in the library. Apparently, the name university was banned by the decree of 1876, which restricted academic freedom. It was the Provincial Council that made the name of the University of Deusto official in its documents. This is how it was known first in Bilbao and soon in Spain and abroad.

According to what was fashionable at that time (19th – early 20th century) at the schools of the Society of Jesus, the movement of students to the chapel, classrooms, dining halls and other places had to be done marching in ranks and in silence.
