Deusto (or Deustu), Basque place name whose etymology is not clarified, has lent its name to the university. Deustos academic authorities used different names, especially the “School of Higher Education,” as stated in the label of many of the books in the library. Apparently, the name university was banned by the decree of 1876, which restricted academic freedom. It was the Provincial Council that made the name of the University of Deusto official in its documents. This is how it was known first in Bilbao and soon in Spain and abroad.
