{"id":553,"date":"2009-11-08T10:11:54","date_gmt":"2009-11-08T09:11:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/preblogs.deusto.es\/abaitua\/?p=553"},"modified":"2014-10-14T11:52:31","modified_gmt":"2014-10-14T09:52:31","slug":"linking-data-in-the-twittsphere","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.deusto.es\/abaitua\/linking-data-in-the-twittsphere\/","title":{"rendered":"Linking data in the Tweetsphere"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For \u00a0a couple of weeks I&#8217;ve been <a href=\"http:\/\/twitterholic.com\/kavango\/\">twitting <\/a>(and <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/kavango\">tweeting<\/a>) more than usual, because<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>I&#8217;m helping in both <a href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/transket\">Transket<\/a>&#8216;s and <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/natouring\">Natouring<\/a>&#8216;s communication campaigns<\/li>\n<li> I&#8217;m trying to understand better when (and how) to use <a href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\">Facebook<\/a>, \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/friendfeed.com\/\">FriendFeed<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/delicious.com\/\">Delicious<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yammer.com\/\">Yammer <\/a>or <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/\">Twitter<\/a> (I also blog and wiki, but these I know when and how).<\/li>\n<li> I&#8217;m introducing my students into Twitter, after having introduced them into <a href=\"http:\/\/www.citeulike.org\/\">CiteULike<\/a>, Delicious; before we go into FriendFeed and GoogleReader. (I&#8217;m sorry I&#8217;ve given up <a href=\"http:\/\/www.twine.com\/\">Twine<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/gnoss.com\/\">Gnoss<\/a> for the moment; interesting but not fluent).<!--more--><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>So I&#8217;ve also been testing several Twitter related services, in particular<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/filesocial.com\/\">FileSocial<\/a>, a very effective and safe way for sharing files (I&#8217;ve shared a MP3) of up to 50MB.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/seesmic.com\/web\/\">Seesmic<\/a>, the best web tool I found to monitor users, lists of users and hashtags.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"twitr.org\/tag\/\">TwitR<\/a>, a directory of users classified according to their favourite hashtags. Very convenient if you are looking to expand your contacts and lists with users with whom you share interests.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>(<a style=\"text-decoration: none; color: #007ec4;\" title=\"Posts by Barb Dybwad\" href=\"http:\/\/mashable.com\/author\/barb-dybwad\/\">Barb Dybwad<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/mashable.com\/2009\/08\/21\/13-twitter-tools\/\">@Mashable<\/a>, suggests 12 more interesting things to do with Twitter).<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 370px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/bnode.org\/blog\/2009\/02\/18\/linked-data-value-spiral\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" title=\"Linked data value spiral (Bnode.org)\" src=\"http:\/\/bnode.org\/media\/2009\/02\/18\/linked_data_value_spiral.png\" alt=\"Linked data value spiral (Bnode.org)\" width=\"360\" height=\"384\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Linked data value spiral (Bnode.org)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Ok, then, I&#8217;ve been converted, I now understand the power of twitting\/tweeting, following, listing and being followed and listed. The most appealing aspect of it has been to realize that every element in Twitter is a potential linked data:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Name <\/strong>&#8211; \u00a0<strong>Location <\/strong>&#8211; \u00a0<strong>Web <\/strong>&#8211; <strong>Bio<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Following <\/strong>&#8211; <strong>Followed <\/strong>&#8211; <strong>Listed<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Favorites <\/strong>&#8211; <strong>Lists<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Tweets <\/strong>(full of linkable data as <strong>URL<\/strong>s, <strong>hashtags<\/strong>, <strong>usernames<\/strong>, <strong>named entities<\/strong>, <strong>keywords <\/strong>and other content terms)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Twittshpere.<\/strong> All these elements are structured and neatly related. The amount of informatin is huge (3 million messages a day, more than 1 million users <a href=\"http:\/\/www.techcrunch.com\/2008\/04\/29\/end-of-speculation-the-real-twitter-usage-numbers\/\">in March 2008<\/a>). It conforms an open, rapidly expanding and meaningful sphere of data, i.e. it is fresh food for linked data.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Linked Data<\/strong>. Tim Berners Lee et alii define linked data as a method of exposing, sharing, and connecting\u00a0<a style=\"text-decoration: none; color: #002bb8; background-image: none; background-repeat: initial; background-attachment: initial; -webkit-background-clip: initial; -webkit-background-origin: initial; background-color: initial; background-position: initial initial;\" title=\"Data\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Data\">data<\/a> via\u00a0<a style=\"text-decoration: none; color: #002bb8; background-image: none; background-repeat: initial; background-attachment: initial; -webkit-background-clip: initial; -webkit-background-origin: initial; background-color: initial; background-position: initial initial;\" title=\"Dereferenceable URIs\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dereferenceable_URIs\">dereferenceable URIs<\/a> on the\u00a0<a style=\"text-decoration: none; color: #5a3696; background-image: none; background-repeat: initial; background-attachment: initial; -webkit-background-clip: initial; -webkit-background-origin: initial; background-color: initial; background-position: initial initial;\" title=\"Semantic Web\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Semantic_Web\">Web<\/a>. I&#8217;m particularly fond of open datasets.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Linking Open Data<\/strong> (source <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Linked_Data\">Wikipedia<\/a>): A project to extend the Web with a data commons by publishing various open datasets as RDF on the Web and by setting RDF links between data items from different data sources. In October 2007, datasets consisted of over two billion RDF triples, which were interlinked by over two million RDF links. By May 2009 this had grown to 4.2 billion RDF triples, interlinked by around 142 million RDF links.<\/p>\n<ul style=\"line-height: 1.5em; list-style-type: square; margin-top: 0.3em; margin-right: 0px;
