‘The refugee crisis is one of the defining challenges of the 21st century, but the response of the international community has been a shameful failure’, said Salil Shetty, Amnesty International’s secretary general. A report of Amnesty International, titled The Global Refugee Crisis: A Conspiracy of Neglect, places a focus on the Syrian crisis as the countries hosting Syrian refugees have received no meaningful international support. Indeed the organization claims that the UN humanitarian aid covers less than a quarter of the necessary funds to care for refugees. In addition, the responses to the displacement crises in sub-Saharan Africa and the Mediterranean migrant crisis have been a failure too. There are 3 million refugees in sub-Saharan Africa and about 3500 people died trying to cross the Mediterranean in 2014. In this way, Amnesty International criticized the international community that fails to address the worst displacement crisis since the WWII, which is condemning millions of refugees to misery.
