She holds a degree in Linguistics from the Complutense University of Madrid (Spain), a degree in German Philology from the University of the Basque Country – Euskal Herriko Unibertsitatea (UPV-EHU, Spain), and a PhD in Linguistics from the same university. She conducted her postdoctoral research at the University of British Columbia (Canada) and the Université Paris Descartes (France) with a Marie Curie IOF postdoctoral fellowship, followed by further research at the University of Padua (Italy). In 2020, she returned to the Basque Country as the Principal Investigator of a project funded by the Spanish State Research Agency.

Her research falls within the field of psycholinguistics, specialising in language acquisition and processing—particularly linguistic structure—throughout the lifespan. Her work employs behavioural and neuroscience techniques (fNIRS, EEG) to study both monolingual and bilingual populations. De la Cruz-Pavía has demonstrated that infants just a few months old can easily detect structural patterns in a wide range of stimuli, including speech, sign language, and abstract visual patterns such as mosaics.

Her most recent research examines the impact of degraded auditory conditions—characteristic of the signals produced by current cochlear implants—on infants’ ability to segment speech into words, a crucial process in language comprehension. At the same time, she investigates how healthy ageing affects linguistic abilities, as well as the cognitive and linguistic consequences of ageing as a bilingual speaker.

Main publications:

● Irene de la Cruz-Pavía, Monica Hegde, Laurianne Cabrera, Thierry Nazzi.
