Leisure across the later life span: Continuity and change
Leisure across the later life span has been studied extensively for several decades. Based on the existing literature, including the author’s own empirical and theoretical work, this paper aims to review the current body of knowledge regarding continuity and change in leisure in later life. The paper illustrates how leisure changes across the later life span; discusses how the meaning of leisure may be influenced during later life; and describes how common later-life transitions, such as retirement and spousal loss, can affect older adults’ leisure and well-being. This area of research has both theoretical and practical implications. From a theoretical perspective, investigating why and how leisure changes as people age contributes to the understanding of the role of leisure in adjusting to and coping with challenges associated with old age. From a practical perspective, such investigations may enhance leisure service providers’ understanding of their older audiences, and eventually lead to better programming and services in the field.
