Elena Atienza es Investigadora Ramón y Cajal del Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades (España) en la Universidad de Deusto (España) y pertenece al equipo de investigación Integración europea y derecho patrimonial en un contexto global de su Facultad de Derecho.
Su carrera investigadora se ha desarrollado en un centro de investigación del más alto nivel: la Cátedra Interuniversitaria de Derecho y Genoma Humano, Universidad de Deusto-Universidad del País Vasco UPV/EHU (España). Un periodo de investigación muy fructífero que culminó con una beca Postdoctoral del Gobierno Vasco y más tarde, con una beca Postdoctoral Juan de la Cierva del Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades. Destaca su dilatada experiencia internacional, con estancias de investigación en el Centro de Direito Biomédico, Universidad de Coimbra (Portugal); en el Centre de Documentation et de Recherches Européennes, Université de Pau et des Pays de l´Adour (Francia), en la National and Kapodistrian, University of Athens (Grecia), en el Dipartimento di Giurisprudenza, Università di Pisa (Italia) y en el Catolica Research Centre for the Future of Law – Universidade Católica Portuguesa (Portugal). Además, cuenta con amplia experiencia en gestión, habiendo sido coordinadora de la Revista de Derecho y Genoma Humano (Editorial Dykinson) y, recientemente, ha sido nombrada directora del Diploma Experto en Derecho Sanitario de la Facultad de Derecho de la Universidad de Deusto. Cargo que engarza con su
línea de investigación fundamental: derecho sanitario.
Así, sus ejes centrales de investigación son el bioderecho y la bioética y el derecho sanitario, que incluyen temas relativos a los derechos fundamentales y genética, salud sexual y reproducción humana y genoma; derecho y medicina; medicina del deporte; dopaje y biotecnologías. Su tesis doctoral versaba sobre “Las respuestas del Derecho a las nuevas manifestaciones de dopaje en el deporte”.

Who carries out research at the University of Deusto? Meet Elena Atienza
Elena Atienza is a Ramón y Cajal Research Fellow, funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities, at the University of Deusto (Spain). She is a member of the research team European Integration and Patrimonial Law in a Global Context, within the Faculty of Law.
She has developed her research career within a leading international research centre: The Inter-University Chair in Law and the Human Genome, jointly run by the University of Deusto and the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU). This highly productive period culminated in a Postdoctoral Fellowship from the Basque Government, followed by a Juan de la Cierva Postdoctoral Fellowship from the Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities. She has extensive international research experience, having undertaken research stays at several prestigious institutions: el Centro de Direito Biomédico, University of Coimbra (Portugal); the Centre de Documentation et de Recherches Européennes, Université de Pau et des Pays de l´Adour (France); the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (Greece), the Dipartimento di Giurisprudenza, Università di Pisa (Italy) and the Católica Research Centre for the Future of Law – Universidade Católica Portuguesa (Portugal). In addition to her academic work, she has significant experience in academic management. She served as coordinator of the Revista de Derecho y Genoma Humano (Dykinson Publishing), and was recently appointed Director of the «Expert Diploma in Health Law» offered by the Law School at the University of Deusto. This role aligns closely with her primary research focus: Health Law.
Her main areas of research include Biolaw, Bioethics, and Health Law, covering topics such as Fundamental Rights and Genetics; Sexual Health and Human Reproduction; Genomics; Law and Medicine; Sports Medicine; Doping; and Biotechnologies. Her doctoral thesis explored “Las respuestas del Derecho a las nuevas manifestaciones de dopaje en el deporte” (Legal responses to new forms of doping in sport).
